lit., to wander blind

Jul 17 2013
It’s 2pm on a Wednesday and I should be wandering around Reykjavík. Should be. I’m tired. I’ve spent five weeks wandering and I am physically, mentally, emotionally exhausted by this place. I love this country so damn much and I want to pretend I have all the time to wander it, instead of less than 24 hours that I probably should not be spending on my computer. I finally got my luggage back and put on clean clothes for the first time in a month. I took a shower with actual soap for the first time in two weeks. I realized that I did not take enough pictures. Never enough pictures.
I don’t want to leave.

Í dag…

Ah. Í dag. Ég er að skrifa ritgerðina mina, og í dag ég skrifaði eitt þúsund orð á Konungi Pippinu og Olöfur dottír hans frænfólkinu hönum. Ég vil að hafa tuttugu þúsund orð eða meira. Ég líka efnin mín, en ég líka ekki að skrifa.

Og.

Well. I’m not in Iceland anymore. I am fourteen days outside of Iceland. I might reappear in January, or in August, or I might go to the Faroes. I am going back, hopefully sooner than later, but for now, ég á ekki fólk sem tala íslensku.

(Interesting aside: I can kind of barely read Faroese now, in the same way I can kind of barely read Icelandic. There are some huge grammatical and orthographical differences, but for some reason the thing that strikes me the most is the ø. Icelandic doesn’t have an ø; I think the orthographic equivalent is ö.)

I am definitely keeping up with Icelandic. I have a few Icelandic books, including an Arnaldur Indriðason - hopefully it’s more tolerable in the original than it is in the terrible flat English translation. One of my major senior thesis sources is Karlamagnús saga, and a lot of the scholarship I’ve been able to find about that is in Icelandic. I fully expect to lose what little ear I had gained in the Westfjörds, but at least I’ll get better at spelling.

I’ll make an effort to write at least one 200-word post every week on this blog. If you see any grammatical errors, divebomb me like a kría.

Jess og ég í…uh…ég kann ekki. Ekki Dýrafjörð, ekki Skutulsfjörð. Bara eftir Flateyri. Vóð? Ég kann ekki orðið fyrir “hitchhiking.”
